Prince Albert II attends the 15th United Nations Conference in Copenhagen and participates in several events concerning climate change organized by his Foundation and several of its associates.

Following papers delivered by Jacqueline MacGlade, Director of the European Environmental Agency, and Fadel Muhammad, the Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs, Prince Albert II made a speech concerning the world's endangered oceans at yesterday's "Ocean's Day" meeting of experts organized at the headquarters of the EEA. Prince Albert II made it clear that every country has a responsibility to change its ways in matters of production, consumer practices and, in a broad sense, life in general in order to combat the warming and acidification of our oceans. He also insisted on the international community's obligation to take steps in favor of island nations and those with vulnerable shorelines.

Protecting the Mediterranean

The Prince detailed measures taken by the Principality of Monaco to protect the Mediterranean. He announced the launching of a "Monaco Blue Initiative" organized jointly by the Albert II Foundation and Monaco's Oceanographic Museum, soon to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Prince Albert also took part in a working session entitled "A Fund for the Republic of Congo's forest basin". The Prince Albert II Foundation and this Fund signed a basic agreement establishing a basis for scientific and technical cooperation and for pinpointing important forestry projects in this 800,000 square mile area. The main objective is to encourage environment-friendly development in the region and to bring the great poverty there to the attention of the international community.

"Zero gas emission"

Later His Serene Highness took part in a round-table on electric vehicles organized by the Climate Group where he stressed the interest of developing the use of "zero gas emission" vehicles, citing Monaco's efforts in that direction in partnership with various automobile firms.

Finally, Monaco's Prince participated in a working dinner on the theme "Energy, Climate and Development Objectives for the Century", led by Helen Clark, UN Development Administrator of the United Nations Development Plan and former Prime Minister of New Zealand.

In the presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger

Today His Serene Highness will launch the "EV20 Initiative" with California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. On this occasion he will sign a fundamental agreement with the Climate Group on behalf of research into technical solutions to various issues concerning climate change.

His working day will end with a press conference held by the Aspen Institute, a partner of the Prince Albert II Foundation, during which he will demand that the international community take immediate measures to combat climate changes in the Arctic region.
